Mamdani tells New Yorkers to stay inside during ‘heat emergency’ – NBC New York

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his top commissioners on Tuesday declared a heat emergency as scorching temperatures are expected to grip the tri-state for nearly a week.

Near record, dangerous heat is expected to start Wednesday. The worst conditions should peak Thursday and Friday, potentially lingering into Saturday. Brace for triple digit temperatures.

“With humidity it could feel even hotter. With a heat index that could peak around 112 degrees,” Mamdani warned at a press briefing. “And with conditions this dangerous, I am asking every New Yorker to make a heat plan before the worst of it arrives.”

The city is launching cooling outreach, on location or in mobile cooling vans and pop-up stations. The LINK NYC kiosks will also direct New Yorkers to their nearest cooling center.

Beach lifeguards will stick to their typical summer hours, but the city’s large swimming pools will stay open an hour later until 8 p.m.

“The single most important thing you can do in these temperatures, is to stay indoors with air conditioning. If you can avoid going outside during the hottest hours of the day, please do so,” the mayor advised.
