what to know – NBC New York

Wondering if your street has been plowed yet?

DSNY crews have been salting and plowing New York City streets since 5 a.m. Sunday, with teams spread out across the five boroughs.

“The first snowfall landed at Staten Island this morning at 5 a.m. By 5:10 a.m., sanitation had already started spreading salt citywide,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a briefing.

Snow plows and modified garbage trucks have been crisscrossing New York City ever since. The only problem? They’re up against a major snow storm expected to dump on the city for more than 24 hours. The streets already plowed by late Sunday morning have already been covered again, and again.

“Since last night, over 2,500 sanitation workers have been deployed on every single 12 hour shift laying down salt,” Mamdani said, describing the immense operation underway.

The city tracks its massive plowing operation through an online website with updated real-time information. Check it out here.

A map breaks down the entire city by blocks and shows up to date information on the last time each street was plowed. A green street was treated in the last hour; a blue street within the last three hours.

“We anticipate continued heavy snowfall this afternoon, with several hours of sustained 35 mile per hour wind gusts around 8 p.m. this evening,” Mamdani said. “Light freezing rain will begin to fall and continue overnight.”

While the weather is expected to taper off tomorrow, light snow, a freezing drizzle and intensely cold temperatures are still expected, Mamdani said.

Ten “warming centers” and 126 shelters have been opened up across the city to support residents, Mamdani said. He encouraged residents to stay indoors and off the roads.
