NYCFC hires Pascal Jansen as next head coach
Pascal Jansen has officially been appointed the next head coach of New York City Football Club (NYCFC) on a contract that will run through 2028, the team announced Monday.
Born in London, the 51-year-old has extensive managerial experience, mainly with notable Dutch club AZ Alkmaar from Dec. 2020 to Jan. 2024. He navigated the club to a semifinal appearance of the UEFA Conference League in 2023.
He spent the beginning of the 2024-25 season with Ferencvárosi of the Hungarian top flight, where he led the club to the No. 2 spot in the league before departing the club on Dec. 31.
“We are delighted to welcome Pascal to New York City FC,” NYCFC sporting director David Lee said. “We have a group of really talented players and wanted to hire an experienced coach that can take us to the next level, and Pascal ticks all the boxes we were looking for to lead New York City FC.
“Pascal brings fantastic experience and a style of play that aligns with our philosophy. Wants to play an entertaining and attacking style that will create chances and score goals, which I’m sure our fans will enjoy watching and will help us compete for trophies across all competitions in 2025 and beyond. Throughout his career, Pascal has vast experience and a great track record of developing young players who have gone on to have success at the highest levels in Europe and know how to maximize their potential to develop them both on and off the field.”
NYCFC is coming off a disappointing 2024 season in which it finished sixth in the Eastern Conference. After upsetting FC Cincinnati in the first round, they were booted out of the playoffs by the rival New York Red Bulls, who ultimately won the conference title and made its second-ever MLS Cup Final appearance.
The result prompted the dismissal of Nick Cushing as head coach. Jansen is now the third head coach of the NYCFC since June 2022.
“I am thrilled to be joining New York City FC,” Jansen said. “This is a special club, with an exciting future and I’m proud to continue my professional journey here in this amazing city and this rapidly improving league. I can’t wait for preseason to begin so I can meet the staff and players and get the season underway.
“I believe in a holistic approach where we want to make sure the players in our environment live up to their full potential and become the best version of themselves. I have a passion for developing players and helping them become better people and better athletes.”
