We hiked five miles in and back and learned about the great railroad built through the wilderness and the Pontoosuc Turnpike, first road built through the mountains here. Sights seen; the Double Arch, 65- and 70-foot National Historic Landmark Arch Bridges, the cut and how they got the railroad through it, the quarry and feather drill, Berkshire Cultural Center, Railroad workers housing, the Gator Arch Bridge, the three county boundary stones, Stagecoach Inn….An exceptional day at the Historic Keystone Arch Bridges Trail Group Hike in Chester, narrated by Mr. Dave Pierce of the Chester Railway Museum!
