An explosion at a Staten Island shipyard on Friday afternoon left at least 16 people, including nine firefighters, seriously injured.
Two of the nine FDNY members were said to be in serious condition at a local hospital following the blast, which occurred just after 3:30 p.m. on May 22 at the Richmond Industrial Complex, located at 3075 Richmond Terrace.
Fire marshals are investigating what sparked the explosion, which happened after firefighters arrived on the scene to battle a reported fire.
ABC7 reported that the incident happened in the basement of a metal structure near the docks. At least one worker at the yard is unaccounted for after the incident.
According to the Associated Press, more than 200 FDNY personnel are now on the scene. The city’s Emergency Management office advises to avoid traveling to the site as the operation continues.
